Understand the setting. Make it your own.

A useful recommendation explains itself. Explore the starting proposal, understand its sources and see what happens before it becomes an active rule.

A video, a game, something new to explore. Clarity offers a starting allowance for leisure media. A day off can leave more room than a school day.

Schoolwork stays outside the leisure allowance.

Where do these proposals come from?

These are adjustable Clarity product defaults, not scientifically prescribed minutes. The sources explain the wider context. This website illustrates a proposal; it does not change app settings. AAP · 5 Cs ↗

The questions behind the settings.

What is preselected — and what do we choose?

Clarity offers a starting proposal for leisure media, chat and sleep planning for ages 6–15. Review it with your child. Apps and categories remain unselected until your family chooses them; opening a recommendation does not save a rule or grant access.

Are the exact minutes based on a study?

The minutes are adjustable Clarity product defaults, not a research-established prescription. The sources explain the wider context: development, content, daily routine, communication and sleep. Your child's needs and the purpose of an activity still matter.

What changes on a day off?

The example distinguishes school days from free days. In the app, confirmed school calendars, the saved weekly pattern and explicit daily exceptions can inform the day. If the school context is missing or out of date, it needs review.

When does an app limit actually work?

A parent first prepares the plan. The child's connected iPhone also needs Clarity and Apple's Screen Time permission. Check the device setup status. A saved proposal alone does not enforce a limit. Chat hours in Clarity work separately from restrictions for other apps.

Can parents read every conversation?

Joining a family does not grant blanket access to private conversations. Protection settings and any sharing of selected chat excerpts have their own consent requirements. Blocking and reporting remain specific actions, with context you choose to share.

Who sees school information and personal entries?

Your child chooses who sees their school information and can change that choice in the Family Hub. Journal entries and health data are not part of the shared family area.

Where should we begin?

Start with one problem you want to solve, discuss a small agreement and revisit it together. The AAP Family Media Plan is a practical way to talk about routines, content and moments without screens. AAP Family Media Plan ↗
